Cellulose Insulation

Blown Cellulose Insulation In Attic

Blown in cellulose is a highly effective, environmentally friendly insulation solution. Made from recycled newspaper and treated with borate for fire retardancy, the even distribution of blown in cellulose insulation makes for a high-performance insulation that has come into increasing favor among green builders and building energy efficiency experts.

Following are the typical types and means of cellulose installation:

Loose Fill

In a blown cellulose installation, the material is simply blown into place in a loose, unconsolidated state. This is commonly done in attics, where the cellulose is supported by the ceiling beneath. Because the nature of blown cellulose causes it to settle over time, extra material is added in the initial application.

Dense Packed

Cellulose can be blown in closed cavities like walls, or cathedral ceilings, but in these situations, it must be installed at a greater density to prevent settling. This process is called “dense packing”, and it is an effective air barrier system.

Why We Install Cellulose Insulation

Environmentally Friendly

Cellulose is made from recycled newspaper, so it’s an earth-friendly insulation solution. You can also rest assured that it’s a safe product to have in your house — no formaldehyde, and no harmful chemicals.

Consistent High Performance

Because cellulose is blown into cavities as small particles rather than installed in batt form, it’s far less likely to come with gaps and air leaks around the edges. This means that you get consistent high performance – for a cozier, more energy efficient home.

Fire Retardant

Cellulose is treated with flame-retardant borate, which is highly effective at slowing down the spread of fires. A house that is insulated with blown in cellulose insulation is safer from a fire-hazard standpoint than an uninsulated house.

We also install batt insulation, which is typically used as a surface to spray foam against and is not left uncovered, and we offer air sealing services. Depending on your project’s specifications, we may recommend a hybrid system that combines several insulation materials and techniques to achieve a custom thermal solution.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is an advanced and efficient insulation product that significantly enhances a home’s thermal efficiency. Its higher R-value and unrivaled air-sealing capabilities, effectively curtail air leakage while delivering optimal thermal performance, making it one of the highest-performing insulation products available. When we determine that spray foam is the right material for your project, it is because of the exceptional benefits it provides:

High R-Value

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) boasts an impressive R-value (thermal resistance) of approximately R-6 per inch of installed insulation, making it a top-performing insulation product on the market

Superior Air Sealing

Spray foam’s ability to fill all cracks and gaps within the cavities it occupies gives it an edge over other insulation types. By sealing off these potential leakage spots, the foam not only reduces drafts but also curtails the infiltration of moisture and harmful gasses.

Moisture & Mold Reduction

Thanks to the superior air-sealing properties of spray polyurethane foam, moisture is less likely to find its way into your home or building once it’s insulated with this material. This significant reduction in moisture penetration minimizes the risk of mold growth and helps prevent the structural damage and rot that water infiltration can cause.

Johns Manville Polyurethane Spray Foam Insulation

We use closed cell spray foam from Johns Manville because, unlike open cell spray foam, it provides a vapor barrier and has a higher R-value per cubic inch. Insulation Man offers highly trained technicians with many years of experience in spray foam installation. We can help you find the right application to fit your insulation project.

Air Sealing

Air sealing is one of the most cost-effective energy efficiency improvements a home or building can undergo. The professionals at Insulation Man prioritizes air sealing with every insulation project we complete. We take the time to do it right so that you can enjoy long-term home comfort and energy bill savings.

Areas to Air Seal In A House

Very few homes are airtight. Most are riddled with small openings, called air leaks, that allow air to flow into and out of the house without control. This is a huge problem that can greatly reduce the R-value effectiveness of any insulation that is installed and bring outdoor air pollutants into your home.

Houses located in the Southern Tier of NY and Northeastern PA in the winter months experience large icicles and ice damming caused by air leaks in your attic and inadequate insulation.

Air leaks can be found just about anywhere in your home, although they are especially common in the attic, making air sealing your attic especially important.

Other areas of concern include:

  • Basement Rim Joists
  • Chimney Shafts
  • House Fans
  • Seams Between Building Materials
  • Windows and Doors
  • Recessed Lighting
  • Wire Penetrations

Benefits of Air Sealing

  • Eliminates Drafts
  • Stabilizes House Temperatures
  • Makes Indoor Air Quality Healthier
  • Increases Energy Efficiency
  • Prevents Icicles
  • Aids Pest Infiltration

With an air sealed home, the performance and benefits of insulation are increased, leading to a healthier, more energy efficient, and more comfortable living space. At Insulation Man, we utilize professional insulation and air sealing techniques and will identify the most cost-effective methods of improving your home or building’s air barriers. We often use a combination of caulk, spray foam, and weatherstripping to completely air seal and weatherize a home.
